Staghorn Hermit Crab These are very unusual hermits crabs which have a symbiotic relationship with the coral which they live in. The crab makes it's home inside the staghorn hydrocoral which helps protect it from predators. When the crab retreats into the shell the enlarged claw of the crab completely seals off the entrance. These are reef safe hermit crabs which come from a mixed bottom of sand and rock. As the coral grows the crab will keep a portion just large enough to accomodate it open for protection. |
