It is recommended to have approx 1 pound per gallon of live rock when you intend to use live rock in conjunction with live sand to provide the filtration for your reef or fish only. This is meant to be a guide. As with all guides, there are other things which must be taken into account such as the density of the rock you plan on using. | |
| If you are using a denser rock, like the aquacultured gulf rocks, you'll probably need much more than the one pound per gallon in order to get the same benefit. Besides the filtration benifits of live rock, it also provides a more natural home for your fish and critters as well as greatly increasing the biodiversity of your small ecosystem. |  |
