SNEReefers Club travels to Norwalk Maritime Center

On 16Jun02 the SNEReefers club had one of our meetings at the Norwalk Maritime Center in Norwalk CT. The aquarium is devoted to all aspects of life in and around the Long Island Sound. We were lucky enough to get a behind the scenes tour of many exhibits and see how they run their tanks. Below are some pictures of our members enjoying the day and some of the sights around the aquarium. Hope you enjoy.

Andrew listens to the chatter.

This angel was actually caught in the sound.

Annick and Mark by the jellyfish tank.

Annick and MickeyDee try to slide a few more raffle tickets into their pockets.

Archer fish.

A look behind the scenes from above the shark tank.

Bill fields a question about items available for trade.

Bill tries to wrestle some corals from "sticky fingers".

Bluefish kept in the shark tank. The pic looks funny cause the tank is kept very dark. Tough for pics.

Here is Bruce daydreaming about how those two fire shrimp in the raffle will look in his tank.

Here Bruce doesn't yet know he won't be taking home any fire shrimp after all.

The raffle is over, Bruce starts to give members the stink eye.

Bruce decides he can't go on without the fire shrimp and wonders if strangling himself is the answer.

Bruce has decided to stay with us (great choice) but is pouting, can anyone figure out why?

Here our tour guide feeds the jellyfish.

This hermit was in the lionfish tank and was much larger than a softball.

Some of the aquariums hospital tanks kept behind the scenes.

This is part of their awesome jawfish tank. The jawfish in here are huge. Really nice looking tank.

This is their jellyfish tank with the flash on as the tank is also kept very dark. This round tank extends from floor to ceiling.

One of the many jellyfish in the tank.

Just a wider shot to show more jellyfish.

Jenna tries on her new summer wardrobe.

Jenne getting the low down on a stone fish.

Jerry and Annick. Here Jerry is trying to figure out just who the hell invited me.

Jerry taking a few pics of his own.

Kyle explains how he's gonna swipe the fire fish away from Bruces grasp to his wife and Andrew.

Just a pic of a random exhibit of fish found locally.

All these tropical strays, including angels, butterflys, boxfish, cowfish and squirrel fish were caught locally in the sound during summer months.

Here is the skimmer used to run the aqauriums turtle tank. Our tour guide giggled excitedly while showing us all the features it had that we don't on ours such as self cleaning.

Some members looking at the skimmer. Notice our guide had to put a mat down to keep others from slipping and falling on the drool.

The blue tank here is the ozone contact tank used on the turtle tank.

The heater used on the turtle tank.

And of course one of the two turtles.

Looking over some of the many items members brought for trade.

Even our tour guide (middle) managed to leave with some critters for the newly acquired reef tank the aquarium just got.

Here MickeyDee tries to measure the Erics beak.

Raiding the wishing well. Ask them what they were doing though and I bet they try and say they were petting the rays.

Eric helps Jenna wash evidence from the wishing well raids off her hands.

"Hmmm, I wonder if anyone would notice if all the tickets I picked were my own?"

Had to use the flash to get a pic of this huge octopus.

Our tour guide giving us some info on the schooling fish in this round tank.

An upside down jellyfish. One of the few tanks lit by halides.

Very tough to get pics in here because the tank was so dark. But here's one of many sand tiger sharks kept in a huge 18foot deep tank.

I have a ton more pics of our visit and I can post them to an index for anyone who would like to go through them and keep some for yourself. Let me know if you'd like me to do this. I'd like to thank Jerry for all his effort putting this meeting together as I had a great time and am very much looking forward to the next meeting. Thanks to everyone else for being so much fun. You guys are a great bunch of folks. Sorry to those who couldn't make it, you don't know what you missed.
